INTRODUCING ROMANS, CHAPTER 13
1) Submission to
Governing Authorities (Verses 1-7), DESTINY
Let everyone be subject
to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which
God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by
God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the
authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do
so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For
rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do
you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right
and you will be commended. 4 For
the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be
afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s
servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the
authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the
authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you
owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect;
if honor, then honor
SECTION QUESTIONS:
1.
Who established
authority? (V.1)
2. How can one bring judgment on himself? (V.2)
3. How can we be free of the fear of those in authority? (V.3)
4. Why is it necessary to submit to the authorities? (V.5)
Thought Question: What are we to do as Christians when what the governing
body tells us we must do opposes the will of God? (Daniel 3 MSG, 3 Hebrew Boys)
(Daniel 6 MSG, Lion’s Den)
2), Love Fulfills the Law, (Verses 8-10), JEANNIE
8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to
love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit
adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not
covet,”[a] and whatever other
command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your
neighbor as yourself.”[b] 10 Love
does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law.
SECTION QUESTIONS:
1. How can we fulfill the law? (V.8)
2.
What commandment sums up all the
commandments? (V.9)
Thought Question: Is there a difference between human love and the love of
God?
3)The
Day is Near (Verses 11-14), MAMA
11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has
already come for you to wake up from your slumber because our
salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is
almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the
armor of light. 13 Let
us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and
drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension
and jealousy. 14 Rather,
clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how
to gratify the desires of the flesh.[c
SECTION QUESTIONS:
1.
Explain verse 11.
2.
What must we do to be ready to meet
Christ? (V.12-14)
Thought Question: What do day and night symbolize in
this section of scripture?
CONFESSION(S):
Heavenly
Father, thank You for the amazing book of Romans, the incredible truths it
contains, and the important lessons it teaches. Give us a teachable spirit so
that by Your grace we may learn to love all people with a supernatural,
Christ-like love. Help us to forgive those who have hurt or harmed us, and to
multiply Your everlasting love for others in our hearts, for Your eternal
praise and glory. This we ask in the name of Jesus. We thank you that you are
in control of all that is happening in our lives, and throughout the world, and
beyond. We pray that while we are here, You will take our lives and use them in
whatever way You choose, that we may be faithful witnesses and bring glory to
Your name. We pray for the leaders and government of this nation and pray that
You would expose and punish the evil-doers and continue to bring in more men
and women of integrity to lead our country. We ask these things in Jesus’ name.
