ELNORA’S BIBLE STUDY WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS, II Thessalonians 1, Saturday, April 4, 2026

Context for Chapter  Second Thessalonians opens with Paul's typical greetings, then shifts into encouragement. In his prior letter, Paul had explained the nature of death, for a Christian believer, and given a description of Christ's eventual return for His people. Now, the Thessalonian believers were experiencing persecution. Though they seem to be enduring it well, Paul reminds them that judgment before God awaits all people. Those who are persecuted for His sake will be part of His kingdom, while those who reject Him will face fire and vengeance. After this, Paul returns to the subject of Christ's return, and the rapture, seemingly to combat misunderstandings which linger despite his earlier letter. 1.   Greetings & Encouragement From Paul,  Verses 1-6,    TBD 1  This letter is from Paul, Silas, [ a ]  and Timothy. We are writing to the church in Thessalonica, to you who belong to God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2  May God our Fat...

Context for Chapter 5 The end of chapter 4 discussed the nature of the rapture: a sudden, physical ''taking away'' of believers from the earth. Here, Paul continues to refer to this event's sudden and dramatic nature. A key analogy used in this passage is that of daytime versus darkness, and the concept of being awake and alert. As with many of Paul's letters, practical instructions make up the bulk of his closing statements. In particular, Paul adds a command that this letter be read aloud among all of the people of the Thessalonian church.     Context for Chapter 4 Chapters 1-3 had a lot to say about the good reputation of the Thessalonian church. Chapter 4 begins to address points Paul wants to clarify. First of these is the need to grow in good works and to avoid immoral living. Paul begins to explain “the rapture”: the moment when Christ will retrieve believers from this earth. Paul’s explanation seems to be intended to dispel rumors. In the final chapter, Paul will further explain the nature of the “day of the Lord,” correcting what might have been said by false teachers. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more. 2For you remember what we taught you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. ...

Context for Chapter 3 Chapter 3 concludes Paul's comments about the condition of the Thessalonian church. These began in chapter 1 and were given more details in chapters 2 and 3. Here, Paul expresses his joy that the Thessalonians are enduring persecution faithfully, and he prays that they will continue to grow. In the following chapters, Paul will address some of the concerns plaguing the Thessalonians, including their worries about the end-times.  S ource:   https://www.bibleref.com/1-Thessalonians/3/1-Thessalonians-chapter-3.html 1. Encouragement of Timothy’s Visit, Part 1,  Verses 1-6,    JEANNIE Finally, when we could stand it no longer, we decided to stay alone in Athens, 2 and we sent Timothy to visit you.    Context for Chapter 2 Chapter 1 briefly introduced the relationship between Paul and the Christians at Thessalonica. This introduction is expanded in Chapter 2, where Paul gives additional details about how he came to preach there, why he left, and what he has heard of their spiritual progress. Chapter 3 will round out this glowing report with a reference to a visit from Paul’s friend and student, Timothy.   S ource:   https://www.bibleref.com/1-Thessalonians/2/1-Thessalonians-chapter-2.html 1.
