INTRODUCING 1 CORINTHIANS, CHAPTER 5
In chapter 5 Paul continues to confront the Church at Corinth. In chapter 4 he was stern with them regarding their arrogance and pride. The Believers in Corinth were behaving as if they were unaccountable as if they would not be confronted for their behavior. In Chapter 5 Paul chastises the church for their inaction in response to a member of the body who is openly committing incest. Paul commands them to remove the man from their community by turning him over to satan for the destruction of his flesh, in hopes that his spirit would be saved. He told them that they shouldn't even share a meal with anyone who continues to engage in unrepentant sin despite teaching and chastisement. In this chapter, Paul distinguishes between the judgment of believers with that of non-believers. (https://www.bibleref.com/1-Corinthians/5/1-Corinthians-chapter-5.html
Dealing With a Case of Incest, Part 1, Verses 1-4, DESTINY
1I can
hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among
you—something that even pagans don’t do. I am told that a man in your church is
living in sin with his stepmother.[a] 2 You are so
proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you
should remove this man from your fellowship. 3 Even
though I am not with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit.[b] And as though I
were there, I have already passed judgment on this man 4 in the name of
the Lord Jesus. You must call a meeting of the church.[c] I will be present
with you in spirit, and so will the power of our Lord Jesus.
SECTION QUESTIONS:
1. What is the overall problem in the Church Paul is bringing up, the specific immorality? (V.1)
2. How did the Corinthian church deal with the problem? (V.2)
Thought Questions:
1. How do you see this as a prevalent problem these days?
2. What do most churches do about it?
3. As Believers living in an immoral world, what steps can we take to protect ourselves from immorality?
Dealing With a Case of Incest, Part 2, Verses 5-8, TBA
5 Then you
must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature
will be destroyed[d] and he himself[e] will be saved on
the day the Lord[f] returns. 6 Your
boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this sin is like a
little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the
old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be
like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are.
Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.[g] 8 So let us
celebrate the festival, not with the old bread[h] of wickedness and
evil, but with the new bread[i] of sincerity and
truth.
SECTION QUESTIONS:
1. What is Paul's solution/how did he decide to deal with the situation? (V.3-5)
2. We learned recently from Paul's teachings that we are not to judge others and that God is the one and only judge of mankind. Does the consequence he demands the church issue this man correct to do?
3. What does Paul mean when he says that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? (V.6)
4. What was Paul telling us in this verse? (V.7)
5. What festival is Paul talking about in verse 8?
Thought Questions:
1. What does it mean to clean out the old leaven and to be unleavened? (V.6-8)
2. What is the likely consequence of doing nothing?
Dealing With a Case of Incest, Part 3, Verses 9-13, MRS. ELNORA
9 When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. 10 But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. 11 I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer[j] yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people. 12 It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. 13 God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must remove the evil person from among you.”
SECTION QUESTIONS:
1. Who was Paul speaking of in this verse? (V.10)
2. What did Paul advise the Church to do about wicked people in the Church? (V.11)
3. Instead of judging the wicked person in the world what are we to do? (V.13)
Thought Questions:
1. Why is the judgment of sin within the Church found acceptable in this context?
2. How should a Believer act towards people in the world? Is it okay to build close relationships with people in the world?

{1 Corinthians 3-5 MSG}I’ll tell you what I would do. Even though I’m not there in person, consider me right there with you, because I can fully see what’s going on. I’m telling you that this is wrong. You must not simply look the other way and hope it goes away on its own. Bring it out in the open and deal with it in the authority of Jesus our Master. Assemble the community—I’ll be present in spirit with you and our Master Jesus will be present in power. Hold this man’s conduct up to public scrutiny. Let him defend it if he can! But if he can’t, then out with him! It will be totally devastating to him, of course, and embarrassing to you. But better devastation and embarrassment than damnation. You want him on his feet and forgiven before the Master on the Day of Judgment.
Cross References:
Colossians 3:5 - So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don't be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.
Ephesians 5:3 - Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God's people.
Prayer Confession for 1Corinthians, Chapter 5:
Thank you, Lord, that You did not come to judge, for we all are guilty, and deserving of death. Help us to grasp Your grace, and put away a spirit of self-righteousness, and judgment. Give us compassion for the ungodly. help us bear witness to You. Give us courage and wisdom to deal with sin in our lives, church, and body of Christ so that we might be for your glory. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen. (Grace Covenant Church PCA Prayer of Confession)
