ELNORA’S BIBLE STUDY WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS, II Thessalonians 1, Saturday, May 2, 2026
Context for Chapter 3
The prior chapter
explained the events which would precede the ‘day of the Lord:' a time of
severe judgment. Among these were a time of deep spiritual rebellion and the
rise of a figure referred to as the ''man of lawlessness.'' Chapter 2 ended
with a reference to the Thessalonians being established in good works. This
chapter continues that theme, focusing on the need for Christians to exhibit a
strong work ethic. This extends to the way the church applies charity, not
wasting it on those who are capable of work, but simply choose not to. These
thoughts complete Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians.

Paul’s
Request for Prayer, Verses 1-5, KITTY
Finally,
dear brothers and sisters,[a] we ask
you to pray for us. Pray that the Lord’s message will spread rapidly and be
honored wherever it goes, just as when it came to you. 2 Pray,
too, that we will be rescued from wicked and evil people, for not everyone is a
believer. 3 But the Lord is faithful; he will
strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.[b] 4 And
we are confident in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the
things we commanded you. 5 May the Lord lead your
hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God and the
patient endurance that comes from Christ.
SECTION QUESTIONS:
1. Point of Application: Do you regularly pray for your spiritual leaders? How can you begin to make this a habit? What will you pray for them?
2. When the word “tre’-kho” or rapid occurs in Greek writing, it denotes incurring extreme peril, which requires the exertion of all one’s effort to overcome something. So, what is the idea here as it relates to the spread of the Gospel?
3. It is important to mention that God, in His sovereignty, allowed these persecutions and obstacles. What can we learn from this?
An Exhortation to Proper Living, Verses 6-13, DESTINY
6 And now, dear brothers and sisters, we
give you this command in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: Stay away from all
believers[c] who live idle lives and don’t follow the tradition they received[d] from us. 7 For you know that you ought
to imitate us. We were not idle when we were with you. 8 We
never accepted food from anyone without paying for it. We worked hard day and
night so we would not be a burden to any of you. 9 We
certainly had the right to ask you to feed us, but we wanted to give you an
example to follow. 10 Even while we were with you,
we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.” 11 Yet
we hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and meddling
in other people’s business. 12 We command such
people and urge them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and
work to earn their own living. 13 As for the rest
of you, dear brothers and sisters, never get tired of doing good.
SECTION QUESTIONS:
4. Why do you think Paul stood on his authority in Christ to COMMAND that these idle, meddling believers be avoided?
5. What is Paul’s correction of Idleness? What about busybodies?
6. Points of Application: (A) Elevate your work ethic to ensure it reflects responsibility and service to God, rather than a desire to avoid work. (B) Avoid engaging in gossip or meddling in the lives of others, choosing to focus on your own responsibilities. (C) Be persistent in doing good deeds, even when you feel exhausted or frustrated.
Paul’s Final Greetings, Verses 14-18, Volunteer Reader
14 Take note of those who refuse to obey what we say in this letter. Stay
away from them so they will be ashamed. 15 Don’t
think of them as enemies, but warn them as you would a brother or sister.[e]16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you his peace at all times and in
every situation. The Lord be with you all.17 HERE IS MY
GREETING IN MY OWN HANDWRITING—PAUL. I DO THIS IN ALL MY LETTERS TO PROVE THEY
ARE FROM ME. 18 May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
be with you all.
SECTION QUESTIONS:
7. What is the goal of withdrawing from a disorderly brother or sister? (v. 14-15)
8. How is Loving Accountability, Tough Love? (v. 14-15)
10. What do you think is the significance of Paul’s final statement of grace? (v. 18)
11. Did you notice Paul’s Apostolic Signature at the end of his letter? (v. 17)
Confessions/Prayers for 2 Thessalonians, Chapter 3
But the Lord is
faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. (2Thessalonians
3:3)
- "The Lord is faithful, and
He will strengthen and protect me from the evil one."
- "I believe God will guard my heart and mind, keeping me safe from all evil influences.”
For you know that you ought to imitate us. We
were not idle when we were with you We never accepted food from anyone without
paying for it. We worked hard day and night wo we would not be a burden to any
of you. We certainly had the right to ask you to feed us, but we wanted to give
you an example to follow. We command such people (who live idle lives) and urge
them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and work to earn their
own living. (2 Thessalonians 3: 7-9,
12):
- " I have the same work
ethic as Paul and his team. Following their example, I will work with my
own hands as God leads me, I choose not to be a burden to others."
- "I declare that I will not be idle or a busybody, but productive and responsible."
As for the rest of
you, dear brothers and sisters, never get tired of doing good." (2Thessalonians
3:13)
I will never get
tired of doing good. I am determined to do as God commands me regardless of how
I feel or the challenges beset before me.”
May the Lord lead
your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God and the
patient endurance that comes from Christ. (2Thessalonians 3:5)
Heavenly Father,
thank You that Your love has no beginning and no end and that there is no
reserve in that love for Your children. May You direct the hearts of all Your
people into the love of God and the steadfastness of Christ so that we may be a
reflection of Him in all we say and do. In Jesus' name, AMEN. Source:
