Context for Chapter 4

First Timothy chapter 4 serves as a bridge from Paul's introduction into the later part of his letter. Prior chapters indicated the qualifications for church leaders, and some instructions on the proper way for church members to conduct themselves. Here, in chapter 4, Paul reminds Timothy not to be swayed by the false teachings of others. This combination of encouragement and warning sets the stage for the rest of Paul's message. The final two chapters will provide a means for Timothy to identify and avoid errors in his spiritual life.

Warnings Against False Teachers, Verses 1-5, VOLUNTEER READER

1Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. 2 These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead. 3 They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth. 4 Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks. 5 For we know it is made acceptable[b] by the word of God and prayer.

A Good Servant of Jesus Christ, Part 1, Verses 6-10,  DESTINY

6 If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters,[c] Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed. 7 Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. 8 “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” 9 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it. 10 This is why we work hard and continue to struggle,[d] for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.

A Good Servant of Jesus Christ, Part 2, Verses 11-16,  DESTINY

11 Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them. 12 Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. 13 Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them. 14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you. 15 Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.

Prayers for 1 Timothy, Chapter 4

2These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead." (1 Timothy 4:2)

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your grace, mercy, and peace, which you have bestowed on all Your children who walk in humility of heart, gentleness of spirit, and desire a knowledge of the truth. Thank You that I am Your child through faith in Christ Jesus my Lord. I pray that my faith would be strengthened and perfected as I die to self and live for Christ alone. Thank You for the ministry of Paul, the other apostles of Christ, and New Life Church International's Pastors and leaders. Help us to stand fast today and grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, in Whose name I pray, AMEN.

4 Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks. 5 For we know it is made acceptable[b] by the word of God and prayer.  (1 Timothy 4:4)

Heavenly Father, I increasingly see that the dangers caused by false teachings in the early Church, are equally concerning in the Church today. Thank You for Your Word and the many warnings it gives to avoid the evil and do all that is well-pleasing to the Lord. Thank you that You help us to be discerning in our lives and never pay attention to the fanciful myths and unbiblical philosophies that are becoming so popular today. Help me to keep the focus of my heart on Jesus. Keep me from falling into the trap of dismissing the destructive elements in things like myths and mere speculation which can become such a hindrance to spiritual growth and the spread of the gospel. Keep me low at the Cross and humble before You, and help me to translate biblical truth into practical application, for Your greater glory, In Jesus' name, AMEN.

15 Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you. (1 Timothy 4:15)

Glory to God in the highest for Your plan of salvation, and praise Your holy name that I have become Your child, simply because I trusted in the saving work of Christ on Calvary. Thank You, for laying out Your wonderful plan in such simple terms that even I can understand it. In His name, I fully accept this glorious, trustworthy truth. Enable me to be a worthy witness of Christ’s great redeeming sacrifice for the whole world, that whoever calls on the name of the Lord, will be saved. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.
