ELNORA’S BIBLE STUDY WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS, Ephesians 6, Saturday, August 9, 2025
Ephesians opens with three chapters of doctrine, followed by three chapters of practical application. This final chapter of Paul's letter focuses on specific ways Christians should live. It also summarizes the spiritual tools we are given by God, imagining them as a suit of armor. Paul pulls the same basic ideas from the rest of letter together, showing how Christians should live out their knowledge of what salvation in Christ really means. Children and Parents, Verses 1-4, TEAM REFLECTION
1 Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord,[a] for this is the right thing to do. 2 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: 3 If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.” 4 Fathers,[c] do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.
SECTION QUESTIONS
1. Verse 2 says, "This is the first commandment with a promise." What do you think this means?
Slaves and Masters, Verses 5-9, DR. DEBBIE
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. 6 Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart. 7 Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 8 Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free. 9 Masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Don’t threaten them; remember, you both have the same Master in heaven, and he has no favorites.
The Whole Armour of God, Verses 10-20, KESHIA
10 A final
word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of
God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of
the devil. 12 For we[d] are not fighting
against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the
unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil
spirits in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore,
put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in
the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your
ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For
shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully
prepared.[e] 16 In addition to
all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.[f] 17 Put on
salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word
of God. 18 Pray in
the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in
your prayers for all believers everywhere. 19 And pray
for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God’s
mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike.[h] 20 I am in chains
now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I
will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should.
SECTION QUESTIONS
2. All weapons mentioned are defensive, except one. What is our only attack weapon?
3. Verse 18 says, "Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere." What are the ways Paul teaches the church to be prayerful?
4. Verse 20 says, "I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God's ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should." Did you notice the selfless way Paul asked for prayer?
Final Greetings, Verses 21-24, TEAM REFLECTION
21 To bring
you up to date, Tychicus will give you a full report about what I am doing and
how I am getting along. He is a beloved brother and faithful helper in the
Lord’s work. 22 I have sent him to you for this very
purpose—to let you know how we are doing and to encourage you. 23 Peace be
with you, dear brothers and sisters,[i] and may God the
Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you love with faithfulness. 24 May God’s
grace be eternally upon all who love our Lord Jesus Christ.
Confessions for Ephesians, Chapter 6
10” A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we[d] are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:10-12)
Heavenly Father, thank You that You have given me all I need to be victorious in the spiritual battle in which all Your children are engaged. Help me to rely on You and not on my own abilities. Help me to find all I need in You and in the power of Yourmight.
Heavenly Father, thank You that Christ Jesus has won the victory over sin, satan, and the spiritual forces that work in the darkness of this world. Help me to recognize that I can only defeat the spiritual enemies that war in the world today, through Christ. Thank You for providing me with the means to live a victorious life in Christ, through the Word of God, prayer and praise, and by abiding in Christ and He in me. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. (Ephesians 6:13-14)
Heavenly Father, I take up the full armour of God and resist all the works of the enemy in this evil day in which we live. I walk in spirit and truth, being clothed in Christ's own righteousness. I receive Your power from above to stand fast in this evil day and to resist the principalities and powers - to Your praise and glory.
Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus is the Way and the Truth and the Life and that I have been clothed in His own righteousness by grace through faith. As I live out my life, in your strength I walk in integrity, speak the truth in love, and amcontinuously clothed in Christ's own righteousness - so that I am able to stand in the evil day, and having done all to hear You say, "well done, good and faithful child," to Your praise and glory, AMEN.
”In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.[f] 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”(Ephesians 6:16-17)
Heavenly Father, thank You that You have fully equipped us to overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil, with such wonderful pieces of spiritual armour. Thank You for the Shield-of-Faith, with which I am enabled to extinguish all the flaming arrows and fiery darts of the evil one. Help me to stand fast on the promises of God and to keep my eyes looking to Jesus. Thank You that I have not only been saved by grace through faith in Him, but that in the power of the Holy Spirit I may live by grace through faith. Father, I pray that I live by faith and not by sight, to Your eternal praise and glory. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.
