The Opening Prayer: Colossians 4
Context for Chapter 4
Prior chapters in this letter established the supremacy of
Christ, provided counters to false teaching, and gave instructions for
Christian living. Chapter 4 completes these instructions with a general command
regarding Christian conversation. Paul then ends the letter with news and
comments related to various fellow Christian believers. This follows the
general pattern for Paul's letters: introduction, theory, application, personal
news and farewell.

4 Masters,
provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you
also have a Master in heaven. 2 Devote yourselves to
prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And
pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may
proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray
that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5 Be
wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every
opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full
of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer
everyone.

2. Paul's Final Instructions and Greetings, Part 1, Verses 7-11, GROUP DISCUSSION
7 Tychicus will
tell you all the news about me. He is a dear brother, a faithful minister and
fellow servant[a] in the Lord. 8 I am sending
him to you for the express purpose that you may know about our[b] circumstances and
that he may encourage your hearts. 9 He is coming
with Onesimus, our faithful and dear brother, who is one of you. They
will tell you everything that is happening here. 10 My
fellow prisoner Aristarchus sends you his greetings, as does
Mark, the cousin of Barnabas. (You have received instructions about
him; if he comes to you, welcome him.) 11 Jesus, who is
called Justus, also sends greetings. These are the only Jews[c] among my
co-workers for the kingdom of God, and they have proved a comfort to me.

3. Paul's Final Instructions and Greetings, Part 2, Verses 12-18, GROUP DISCUSSION
12 Epaphras, who
is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always
wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of
God, mature and fully assured. 13 I vouch for
him that he is working hard for you and for those at Laodicea and
Hierapolis. 14 Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and
Demas send greetings. 15 Give my
greetings to the brothers and sisters at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the
church in her house. 16 After
this letter has been read to you, see that it is also read in the church
of the Laodiceans and that you in turn read the letter from Laodicea. 17 Tell
Archippus: “See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in
the Lord.” 18 I, Paul,
write this greeting in my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be
with you.

Confessions for Colossians, Chapter 4
2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. (Colossians 4:2-3)
Heavenly Father, I bless You for Your grace and mercy to us. Thank You that I have the right to lay at Your feet my own needs and those of others. Increase my understanding of the great privilege of prayer that has been granted to me and all Your children, and I pray that I increasingly devote my life to You in prayer, praise, and grateful thanks. Thank You that by faith in Christ, I have become part of His mystical Body and have the indwelling Holy Spirit to lead and to guide me in these difficult days. I pray that doors would be open for ministers and ministries to share the Good News of the gospel of Christ and that many would be saved. Bless the ministers and ministries You have used to draw me closer to the Lord Jesus, and I pray that You would provide many openings for the gospel to be preached, both at home and abroad, for Christ’s name’s sake, AMEN.
5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. (Colossians 4:5-6)
Heavenly Father, only you know how many days we have left on this earth. Help us, I pray, to redeem the time we have left, conducting ourselves with all wisdom and grace in our everyday lives. Help us to make the most of every opportunity to share about Jesus to those who have not yet heard of His gracious salvation. Loving Father, may my speech be always gracious or seasoned with salt. Through Your Spirit, I pray that the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart is always acceptable to you so that I only say that which is pleasing to You. In Jesus’s name, AMEN
16 After this letter has been read to you, see that it is also read in the church of the Laodiceans and that you, in turn, read the letter from Laodicea. (Colossians 4:16)
Heavenly Father, thank You for the wonderful truths that are set out in the book of Colossians and in all the Holy Scriptures, which guide us into truth, sharpen our resolve to live as Christ lived, and teach us the way we should behave. May I learn to love Your Word, study the Scriptures daily, and show myself approved unto God so that I live as a shining light in this darkened world and do not fall into spiritual complacency. Thank You that the Word of Truth is freely available in my country, knowing that the days are becoming darker. Protect those who have limited access to Scripture because of oppressive governments and ungodly laws. May we all grow in grace as we watch for the any-day return of the Lord Jesus for His Church. I ask this in His precious name, AMEN.
