ELNORA’S BIBLE STUDY WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS, II Thessalonians 1, Saturday, April 4, 2026
Context for Chapter
Second Thessalonians opens with Paul's typical greetings, then shifts into encouragement. In his prior letter, Paul had explained the nature of death, for a Christian believer, and given a description of Christ's eventual return for His people. Now, the Thessalonian believers were experiencing persecution. Though they seem to be enduring it well, Paul reminds them that judgment before God awaits all people. Those who are persecuted for His sake will be part of His kingdom, while those who reject Him will face fire and vengeance. After this, Paul returns to the subject of Christ's return, and the rapture, seemingly to combat misunderstandings which linger despite his earlier letter.
1. Greetings & Encouragement From Paul, Verses 1-6, TBD
1 This letter is from Paul, Silas,[a] and Timothy. We are writing to the church in Thessalonica, to you who belong to God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 May God our Father[b] and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. 3 Dear brothers and sisters,[c] we can’t help but thank God for you, because your faith is flourishing and your love for one another is growing. 4 We proudly tell God’s other churches about your endurance and faithfulness in all the persecutions and hardships you are suffering. 5 And God will use this persecution to show his justice and to make you worthy of his Kingdom, for which you are suffering. 6 In his justice he will pay back those who persecute you.

2. Encouragement During Persecution, Verses 7-12, DESTINY
7 And God
will provide rest for you who are being persecuted and also for us when the
Lord Jesus appears from heaven. He will come with his mighty angels, 8 in flaming
fire, bringing judgment on those who is don’t know God and on those who refuse to
obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be
punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his
glorious power. 10 When he comes on that day, he
will receive glory from his holy people—praise from all who believe. And this
includes you, for you believed what we told you about him. 11 So we
keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of
his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your
faith prompts you to do. 12 Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be
honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him.
This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus
Christ.[d]

Confessions for II Thessalonians, Chapter 1

(2 Thessalonians 6:4-5)
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which teaches the truth. Help me to read the Scriptures with a teachable spirit and prevent me from being manipulated into any incorrect interpretation, by false teachings or unbiblical doctrines that cause me to lose the peace of God in my heart, which Jesus has promised to all who trust in Him. I pray that as we face these increasingly difficult times, I will patiently endure the trials and tribulations I may be called upon to endure, for Christ's sake. Help me to stand fast in the faith, to pray without ceasing, to rejoice in the Lord always, and in everything to give You thanks and praise. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.

Heavenly Father, thank You for these reassuring words of comfort from Paul, knowing that the ungodly, who oppress Your children unjustly, will one day be punished, and that a day of rest and rewards is planned for all who live godly in Christ Jesus, and suffer persecution for righteousness’ sake. I pray that I may exhibit faith and patient endurance in the difficulties that I face, for Your greater glory - and when I am reviled by evil men, I pray that I may demonstrate the same God-given grace the Lord Jesus Christ showed, when He was despised and rejected by men. Thank You that You are a righteous God, and I pray that I am able to rejoice in all my suffering, and to learn the lessons of patience and faith that You desire to teach me. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.

Heavenly Father, I pray that I, and those that are called by Your name, are counted worthy of the calling by which we have been called. I pray that both individually and as the corporate Body of Christ, we may fulfil every desire for goodness and holiness of heart so that we may work the work of faith in the power of Christ and to His glory.
